Government signs a deal for an additional 2 million doses of the Moderna vaccine

Summary

The government signs a deal to secure a further 2 million doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, bringing the total number of Moderna vaccine doses to 7 million (or 3.5 million people). Overall, the UK will now have access to ‘357 million doses of vaccines from seven different developers’. Business Secretary Alok Sharma says ‘it is essential that we continue to bolster our portfolio of vaccine candidates’ and that the UK is one of the first countries across Europe to sign a deal with Moderna.

The Moderna vaccine uses mRNA technology and is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials. Initial data demonstrate effectiveness against COVID-19 at 'nearly 95%'. Safety data has not been published but initial reports claim ‘no safety issues identified to date’. Pending MHRA approval, the Moderna vaccine may be disseminated ‘as early as spring 2021’.
